Yuxing Chen&#38;nbsp;(b.1998, China) is an artist based in London and Shanghai. 
By reflecting on Chinoiserie in historical and contemporary contexts, she explores how Orientalism has been adopted, romanticised and reproduced by the West. Her photographic practice focuses on the issue of decolonisation, on difference and the gaze of the exotic.

		<description>Two Kinds of Imagination 两种想象 (2024)


This photographic project incorporates the artist's presence in vintage postcards of the Brighton Pavilion, a symbol of the Western fantasy of the Orient, and explores how the West constructs the Orient through the "Chinoiserie", and how the "other" is perceived and imagined in non-native cultures.

		<description>Chinese Behind the Wall 巴伐利亚中国 (2024- ongoing )


This long-term project documents the "Chinese Festival" in Dietfurt, Germany. Rooted in a historical anecdote—locals were humorously dubbed "Chinese hiding behind walls"—the tradition has evolved over 90 years into a Chinese New Year celebration imitating Chinese customs and culture.

The project captures Dietfurt’s complex portrayal of China within globalization and questions how Western perspectives still frame representations of the "Other." Beyond documenting the festival, it explores colonialism, cultural appropriation, and shifts in China’s post-19th-century image. It also examines how the celebration reflects Dietfurters’ identification with Chinese culture, probing the nuanced relationship between such cultural expressions and broader socio-political contexts.

	The Oriental Scene 东方图景 (2021- ongoing)
The Oriental Scene investigates Chinoiserie architecture in the UK in the context of de-colonialism. 

Through a collection of historical archives of the Porcelain Tower of Nanking, which contains objects, paintings and documents, an attempt is made to show a lineage of how the Porcelain Tower has been morphed in various form. 

The East, metaphorically transformed by the Tower, is also hidden within a grander narrative. Photography is used to render these images in a contemporary form by redacting the outline of the reimagining the Oriental presence.
